Perceiving the meaning of the elements that form the territory and interpreting it based on one’s own knowledge. This, in a nutshell, means reading the landscape.
An approach to landscape knowledge, defined as cognitive-perceptive, which goes beyond both the traditional humanistic vision, based on aesthetic perception, and the technical-scientific analysis, which examines reality as such.
The wide acceptance that this procedure finds in the European Council Convention on Landscape makes it the reference paradigm for its practical application in land planning and management, and in involving the population in such activities.
The proposed reading method is the subject of a careful examination aimed, on the one hand, at comparing it with the often controversial vision of landscape typical of modern society, and on the other at highlighting its potential as a free and universal tool of knowledge.
